Yemen war: 120+ killed in one day, including 40 in boat blast, as Houthis take Aden - TomoNews

Yemen's Houthi militia has taken hold of Aden's al-Tawahi district, Reuters reported, adding that locals said the Houthis had entered the historic district of al-Tawahi, where the presidential palace, main port and Aden television station are located.

The Houthi advance comes despite Saudi-led air strikes.

The fighting across Yemen killed 120 people on Wednesday, Reuters reported rescue workers and witnesses as saying. Those killed were mostly civilians, including at least 40 who were trying to flee Aden on a boat that was struck by Houthi shells.

President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi briefly based his government in Aden before fleeing to Saudi Arabia. The Houthis and ex-army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh have been attacking Aden for weeks.

More than 30 airstrikes have hid Saada province in the north, and heavy artillery fire was also launched from across the border, Reuters reported local sources as saying.

About 20 million people, or 80 percent of the population, are estimated to be going hungry in Yemen, according to the United Nations and the Yemen International NGO Forum.

The U.N.'s World Food Programme (WFP) added that a shortage of fuel has crippled hospitals and food supplies in recent weeks, and that its fuel needs have increased from 40,000 litres a month to 1 million litres.
