The remains of a paraplegic woman were found in her mother's San Diego-area apartment wrapped in at least nine trash bags inside a suitcase, according to local reports.

The decomposing remains of Brooke MacBeth, 28, were found on March 3 in Lakeside, NBC 7 reports.

San Diego County Sheriff's deputies arrived at Bonnie MacBeth's apartment to serve an eviction notice, according to a report from the Medical Examiner's office obtained by NBC 7.

Tenant Bonnie Macbeth told them there was a dead woman in the apartment. After letting the deputies inside MacBeth directed them to a locked suitcase wrapped in bedding and trash bags.

"It smelled of decomposition and deputies called the homicide team," said Sheriff's Lt. John Maryon.

Medical examiners said Brook's body weighed in at only 40 pounds.

Neighbors in the complex said Brooke, who was a paraplegic, had not been seen for six months to a year.

"Investigators haven't determined whether the daughter's death was a homicide, and hope the autopsy will provide them with more information," Maryon said.
