Reproduction Prolongs Vampire Squids Lives

Unlike other cephalopods that only reproduce once, vampire squids do it dozens of times, which is believed to prolong their lifespans.

A new study published in the journal Current Biology has suggested that the reproductive habits of vampire squids may help them live longer than other cephalopods. 

While shallow water squids and octopuses generally live no more than two years, a vampire squid's adult stage may last up to eight years. 

The researchers estimated they can spawn more than 20 times in their lifetimes.
