A U.S. Air Force fighter jet crashed into a field near houses and a school in Lincolnshire, England on Wednesday.

The crashed US F-15 fighter jet belongs to the 48th Fighter Wing based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. It came down in a field in Weston Hills at about 3:30 pm local time during a combat training exercise, reported by the BBC.

“I was staring up in the sky and then I looked to the horizon and saw it coming straight down. I thought. ‘It has got to pull up soon’, but it just went straight into the ground. A big plume of smoke then went up,” Viv Prescott, 69, a witness of the incident told the Telegraph.

The pilot managed to ejected from the aircraft before the crash and escaped with very minor injuries, the Telegraph reported. It was unclear what had caused the plane crash.
