ISIS war: Kurdish female fighter Ceylan Ozalp kills self rather than be captured

Ceylan Ozalp, a 19-year-old ethnic Kurd fighting for her people against Islamic State militants near the town of Kobane who had appeared in a BBC report, may have killed herself after being surrounded by Islamic State fighters in a no-win situation.

The BBC report she was featured in introduced most of the Western world to the fact that women actually make up one-third of the Syrian Kurdish forces in the region and fight alongside men.

In the report, she explained that “women are the bravest fighters.” She went on to say “when ISIS fighters see a woman with a gun, they're so afraid they begin to shake. They portray themselves as tough guys to the world. But when they see us with our guns they run away. They see a woman as just a small thing. But one of our women is worth a hundred of their men."

Her parting words may have been forewarning. “We're not scared of anything, We'll fight to the last. We'd rather blow ourselves up than be captured by IS.” If the latest reports coming out of the region are true, then she may have lived up to her words and made the ultimate sacrifice, rather than face whatever cruelties lie at the hands of her enemies.
