Islamic State: U.S. airdrop weapons to Kurdish fighters battling against IS in Kobane
  • 9 years ago
The U.S. has conducted airdrops in Syria to help Kurds fighting attempts by Islamic State militant to seize the city of Kobane.

Three U.S. C-130 aircraft dropped a total of 27 bundles of weapons, ammunition and medical supplies provided by Iraqi Kurdish authorities, the New York Times reported.

On the same day, according to Al Jazeera, the U.S. Central Command said it launched 11 air strikes in and around Kobane overnight.

Recent U.S.-led airstrikes have reportedly killed hundreds of Islamic State fighters and destroyed or damaged Islamic State combat equipment and infrastructure.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Central Command: “[T]he security situation in Kobani remains fragile as ISIL continues to threaten the city and Kurdish forces continue to resist," Reuters reported.

Turkey, however, equates the main Kurdish resistance force in Syria to its own outlawed PKK, or Kurdistan Workers' Party, which it labels as a terrorist organization, and has rejected any arms transfers to Kurdish fighters in Kobane.
