Turkey mining accident: 18 workers trapped after underground water floods mine

Authorities are rushing to rescue 18 miners trapped in a mine in southern Turkey, but according to a government official cited by local media, the trapped workers may have already drowned.
The accident took place at the Has Sekerler mine near the town of Ermenek around noon on Tuesday, local newspaper Hurriyet Daily News reported.
Karaman Governor Murat Koca said about 40 workers were in the mine when the accident occurred. Some workers left the site after one of the galleries experienced problems.
Eighteen workers became trapped after underground water flooded the mine. The exact cause of the flood was not immediately apparent, but Turkey's emergency agency said there was a broken water pipe inside the mine.
The mining workers are now trapped some 350 metres below ground, while about 11,000 cubic meters of water flooded the area.
Rescue workers are in the process of using giant pipes to pump water out of the mine.
The accident represents the second large-scale mining accident in Turkey since May, when more than 300 workers were killed after a fire broke out in a mine in Soma. The Turkish government is under immense pressure as the accidents highlight lax regulations for the working conditions of miners.
