Cold War Redux: NATO intercepts 19 Russian jets skirting European airspace in one day

NATO has recorded an unusually high level of Russian air activity around Europe this week. Jets from eight nations and a NATO air-policing mission over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were scrambled to intercept the Russian aircraft.
NATO said eight Russian aircraft comprised of four TU-95 strategic bombers and four II-78 tanker aircraft, identified by Norwegian F-16 aircraft, were intercepted over the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The aircraft flew from mainland Russian over the Norwegian Sea, where six aircraft turned back and two TU-95 bombers headed southwest, prompting the UK to scramble Typhoon fighter jets. The two bombers then flew toward the Atlantic ocean, where Portuguese F-16s were scrambled. They then flew north to the west of UK afterwards.
Two Tu-95 bombers and two Su-27 fighter jets were detected flying over the Black Sea on Wednesday afternoon, where they were intercepted by Turkish fighter jets, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Two Russian MiG-31s, two Su-34s, one Su-27 and two Su-24 were also detected flying over the Baltic Sea in International airspace. Portugueses F-16 fighters were scrambled in response before the aircraft returned to Russian airspace, according to the Wall Street Journal.
NATO said such flights pose a potential risk to civilian flights as the Russian planes often don’t file flight plans or turn off their transponders, meaning civilian air-traffic control are unable to detect them, the Wall Street Journal reported.
