Russia test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine, Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.

A Sineva RSM-54 intercontinental ballistic missile was fired from the Tula nuclear submarine in the Barents Sea on Wednesday.

The RIA Novosti news agency reported that the missile hit its target in the Kura Test Range in the Russian Far East.

The three-stage Sineva missile can carry four 100-500 kiloton nuclear warheads and has a range of 8,300 kilometres. It can be launched from a depth of up to 55 metres.

Part of the D-9PM system, the RSM-54 Sineva missile is an upgraded version of the RSM-54, which Russia stopped producing in 1996.
