ISIS in Kobani: Kurdish fighters turn the tide against jihadist militants in Syrian border city
  • 9 years ago
Kurdish fighters retook control of six buildings formerly occupied by the Islamic State in a strategic part of the Kobani on Tuesday and seized a number of rocket-propelled grenade launchers and ammunition. Roughly 13 Islamic State militants, including two senior fighters, were reportedly killed in the clashes leading up the strategic capture.

Kurdish forces operating in Kobani say that the battle against Islamic State fighters for control of the Syrian border town has turned in their favor following weeks of U.S.-led airstrikes on Islamic State targets, with the Kurds making significant gains towards the eastern and southeastern parts of town.

Last week Kurdish forces also took control of a road that the Islamic State used to transport supplies to its troops.

An estimated 250 jihadist fighters remain in Kobani, and Kurdish officials believe it may still take months to clear all militants from the area.
