Man rescues baby: logger saves drowning infant from submerged SUV

A Maine logger helped rescue a baby from drowning when he crawled into an upside-down SUV in water and used a knife to cut her loose from her car seat and pull her out, police said.
The infant was not breathing at first and another bystander performed CPR, reviving the girl, police said.
The accident occurred when Stephen McGouldrick lost control of his SUV on a patch of ice on Route 6 in Kossuth Township and rolled the vehicle down an embankment into 2 ½ feet of water, authorities said. McGouldrick and two other adults were able to get out of the SUV, but a three-month-old baby remained trapped inside her car seat.
Leo Moody, 44, was driving home when he saw the flipped SUV in the culvert. Moody called 911 and rushed to the overturned vehicle.
One of the SUV passenger’s told him her baby was in the back seat, so he swam to the vehicle and cut through the seatbelts to get the child seat free. He took the baby to the banks and handed the baby in the car seat to another passer-by, Wade Shorey.
Initially, the baby was not breathing and was unresponsive, so Shorey took her out of the car seat and began performing CPR for about one to two minutes. After being resuscitated, the girl was crying and alert. She was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for further observation.
The adults suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from the hospital.
