Crisis in Iraq: Senior ISIS leader Radwan Taleb al-Hamdouni killed in Mosul airstrike

Senior Islamic State leader Radwan Taleb al-Hamdouni was killed in an airstrike in Mosul on Wednesday, Reuters reported, citing a “local medical source.”

Al-Hamdouni was killed in his car with his driver in a western district of the northern Iraqi city in the attack, which took place on Wednesday afternoon.

Al-Hamdouni was the Islamic State’s “wali,” or governor, of Mosul, the largest city under the group’s control. Because of its size and status as Iraq’s second city, Mosul is a major target of the Iraqi government’s efforts to defeat the Islamic State, whose self-proclaimed caliphate stretches from northern Iraq to eastern Syria.

A large number of supporters carrying Islamic States flags attended al-Hamdouni’s funeral held later on Wednesday, according to reports.
