Regin spyware: Russia, Saudi Arabia and Ireland hit hard by sophisticated ‘state-sponsored’ virus

A new and advanced hacking spyware has been discovered by an anti-virus firm. The virus has reportedly been in use for six years against targets around the world.

The top-tier espionage tool, known as Regin, is a back door-type Trojan virus, according to Symantec, the American cyber security company that discovered the virus. The company said the malware, given its sophistication, likely took months or years to develop and was likely developed by a nation state.

The malware has five attack stages. Each stage prepares and executes the next stage while complicating detection, similar to the concept of Russian nesting dolls, Fortune reported. The final stage is when the virus takes control of the computer.

Once installed on a computer, Regin can perform tasks such as capturing screenshots, stealing passwords and recovering deleted files, according to the BBC.

The malware has been used to spy on government organisations, businesses as well as individuals. Russia, Saudi Arabia and Ireland have reportedly been hardest hit.
