Tobago police are working to identify a motive behind the killing of a retired German couple, Hubertus and Birgid Keil, whose bodies were found in Bacolet over the weekend.

Two people first stumbled upon the body of Birgid, 74, on the beach near the victims’ home before noon on Saturday morning. After the police arrived on scene to investigate, the body of Hubertus, 74, was discovered over 100 metres away from his wife’s.

The male victim had defensive wounds on his hands, and both bodies bore gaping chop wounds on their backs and necks. The police said that no one appears to have broken into the couple’s villa and that their belongings, including mobile phones and laptops, appear untouched.

The couple were last seen alive on Friday evening, according to one report, but investigators believe that the murder may have occurred just shortly before the bodies were found.

The Keils arrived in Tobago on October 25 and planned on staying until March next year. The couple is said to have visited Tobago for the past 20 years.
