Fukushima: trenches sealed off to prevent flow of radioactive water into the ocean

Tokyo Electric Company this week began cement-pouring work to block up underground trenches at the Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant.

As the trenches are being filled, radioactive water is being drawn up from the No. 2 reactor in an effort to control the overflow and leakage of highly contaminated water into the ground.

The cement work got underway after an attempt to seal off the trenches earlier this month failed to halt water from leaking.

TEPCO will begin filling the trenches at the No. 3 reactor next month and expects to finish the work by the end of March 2015. These two reactors hold an estimated 11,000 tons of radioactive water, according to a Jiji Press report.
