HK pro-democracy protests: protesters escalate as police clear sites in Admiralty and Mongkok

New waves of clashes erupted as Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters defied orders to retreat after more than two months of demonstrations in key areas in the city.

Protesters broke through cordons into Tamar Park and Lung Wo Road near government buildings in Admiralty after student leaders urged supporters to escalate protests on Sunday night, the Guardian reported. Police cleared both Tamar Park and Lung Wo Road by Monday morning.

Police began to clear protest sites in the middle of last month. Court bailiffs faced no resistance when they cleared part of a protest camp near the Citic Tower in Admiralty next to government buildings on November 18. But when a protest site on Argyle Street in Mongkok was cleared on November 25, heavy clashes between protesters and police ensued. Police then cleared protest camps on Nathan Road on November 26 in a two-day operation during which a reported that 80 people were arrested, according to reports by Hong Kong’s Apple Daily newspaper and the Wall Street Journal.

The main protest camp next to government headquarters and a smaller camp in Causeway Bay remain intact.
