Occupy Central: 74-day civil disobedience ends as police arrest activists

Hong Kong police on Thursday arrested pro-democracy demonstrators and student activists who had refused to leave encampments on the doorstep of government headquarters -- fulfilling a government promise to end a civil disobedience campaign that lasted an unprecedented 74 days.

As the police carried demonstrators to waiting vehicles, protesters remained defiant. They vowed to return and continue the fight to bring full democracy to this modern Asian city.

Among those arrested were Next Media chairman Jimmy Lai, the owner of Next Media Animation and TomoNews.

Police also arrested singer Denise Ho and pro-democracy lawmakers Martin Lee, Audrey Eu and Claudia Mo.

At issue is the right to choose the city’s top leader, the chief executive, a position presently held by Beijing-appointed CY Leung. The Basic Law promises that Hong Kong citizens will be able to elect their chief executive.

But Beijing has gone back on that promise. Beijing will only allow two to three candidates of its choosing, ensuring that no one from the pro-democracy camp will ever lead the city.
