Teen survives bear attack: 15-year-old girl plays dead to fool attacking black bear

A 15-year-old Florida teenager was walking her dog on Sunday night when she was attacked by a bear but survived by playing dead.
High school freshman Leah Reeder was walking her dog Ralph around 6 p.m. towards a grassy lot between the post office and the Big Top store.
“It was pretty scary,” Reeder told the Apalachicola Times from her hospital bed. “I was listening to music and I heard my dog start barking. It was like a black blur.”
She said the bear shoved her down and she began screaming. “I guess nobody heard me,” the freshman said. “After I realized nobody was coming, I stopped screaming, and it started dragging me to the ditch. My dog Ralph was sitting there barking at it.”
Reeder said she remembered from school that one option was to play dead. “As soon as I stopped screaming, it stopped biting me. It lost grip on my jacket and fell in the ditch and got up and ran away. I thought it was going to come back but it didn’t.”
Reeder was able to make it back to her dad Kenny Reeder’s place, no more than a block away. He called 911 and her mother Sherry Mann. Mann arrived on the scene right after the ambulance did.
Reeder was taken to Bay Medical Center, where medical staff found lacerations to the right side of her head and face, with evidence of bite and claw marks to her right arm and right leg.
“She managed to crack a few smiles at me before she went in for surgery,” Mann told ABC affiliate WMBB-TV in Panama City.
Reeder underwent plastic surgery that lasted for about two hours. She is in stable condition and recovering.
Florida FIsh and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed that Reeder was attacked by a bear, WMBB-TV reported. They are currently looking to trap and remove the bear.
