New Islamic State hostage: Jordanian F-16 pilot captured in Syria after jet crashed near Raqqa

Islamic State militants captured a Jordanian pilot on Wednesday in Syria after his plane went down during US-led airstrikes against the radical Islamist group.

A media center affiliated with the Islamic state claimed that the pilot ejected after being attacked by antiaircraft fire near the city Raqqa, northeast Syria.

Jordan and the US Central Command later denied that the plane had been shot down, saying a mechanical problem was likely the cause.

The crashed fighter was on a mission against Islamic State targets in and around the group’s defacto capital of Raqqa when it went down.

The Islamic State is known to have a range of weapons capable of bringing down a plane, including truck mounted machine guns, anti-aircraft weaponry captured from the Syrian and Iraqi armies and Chinese-made FN-6 portable air defense systems from other Syrian rebel groups.

Coalition officials later said there was no indication that the plane had been shot down and that mechanical failure or pilot error was more likely the reason for the loss.

The plane is the first aircraft lost in Iraq and Syria since the US-led coalition air campaign against the Islamic State began in August.

Jordan’s armed forces said in a statement that if would hold the Islamic State responsible for the pilot’s safety and well-being.
