A suspected drunk driver was kind enough to hit a woman while driving and then continue down the road with her on the roof of his vehicle before he was stopped by pedestrians who jumped out into the street to stop him, witnesses said.

According to the arrest report, the incident occurred just before 2 a.m. Sunday on Frankfort Avenue in Louisville.

Caroline Fouts was out celebrating her 22nd birthday when she was walking across the street at the crosswalk.

John Raymond Cecil, Jr., 46, was driving a black BMW eastbound on Frankfort Avenue with a blood alcohol level four-times the legal limit at .351 when he ran the red light.

He slammed into Fouts at the crosswalk. She hit the bumper of the car and then smashed into the windshield with her elbow before rolling onto the roof of the moving car.

Cecil continued driving with Fouts on the roof of his car until several pedestrians jumped out into the street, which caused Cecil to turn southbound down Breckenridge Lane, where he finally came to a stop.

Police said Cecil smelled strongly of alcohol, had slurred speech, glassy, bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet.

The arrest report said the force of impact caused the front grill and windshield of the car to cave in and caused a large dent in the roof of the vehicle. The collision was also big enough to knock Fouts’ boot and jacket from her body.

Fouts was taken to University Hospital with a broken right shoulder and injuries to her knees.

Cecil has been charged with several counts including driving under the influence, wanton endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident.
