Airsoft gun shooting: Note left on phone confirms ‘suicide by cop’

Yesterday 32-year-old Matthew Hoffman was shot and killed by San Francisco police officers after he pulled out a replica BB gun out of his waistband.
Now it seems that he was actually attempting to end his own life the entire time; in other words, “suicide by cop.”
Early Sunday afternoon, Hoffman walked up to two patrolmen on 16th Street, attempting to ask what kind of firearms they carried. He was simply ignored by the officers and left.
Later that same day, he was spotted trespassing in the parking lot of the Mission Police Station. He was asked to leave and seemed to comply, but then turned around and stood there. When officers tried to confront the man, he pulled out the replica Airsoft gun and pointed it at officers. Officers opened fire on Hoffman, thinking the weapon was real. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Late Monday, San Francisco police made public a note found on Hoffman’s smartphone titled “Dear Officer(s),” with the permission of Hoffman’s father. In the note Hoffman is apologetic to the officers who “ended the life of a man who was too much of a coward to do it himself.” “Please, don’t blame yourself. I used you. I took advantage of you,” Hoffman wrote.
Hoffman’s replica gun was altered so that the tell-tale orange tip was missing, making it look more like a real weapon.
