At least 10 people killed when a prison bus carrying a dozen inmates and three corrections officers collided with a passing train on Wednesday morning, according to a Reuters report.

The bus, which was transporting state prisoners from Abilene to El Paso, reportedly lost control on an icy highway near the West Texas city of Penwell.

The vehicle next slid down an embankment before colliding with a passing freight train at about 7:30a.m., damaging two train cars.

While the two Union Pacific employees inside the train escaped unharmed, the three injured bus passengers are reportedly in critical condition.

Those killed were identified as eight state prisoners and two corrections officers, according to a Fox News report citing the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

"It's with a heavy heart that we mourn the loss of those killed and injured this morning in a tragic accident," said Brad Livingston, the organization's executive director, according to the report. "Their loved ones will be in our thoughts and prayers."
