Serial killer in Manchester, maybe? 61 bodies pulled from canals, too many for comfort

A recent look at the number of bodies which have been fished out of canals in Manchester, England has led some to speculate that a serial killer may be on the loose.

Greater Manchester Police have fished 61 bodies out of the canals in just 6 years. That’s at least 10 bodies a year which seems to be an awful lot of accidental drownings.

Professor Craig Jackson, head of psychology at Birmingham City University, said that it is unlikely that all the bodies bobbed up as the result of accidents or suicides. According to the professor, canals are not popular suicide spots, they are, however popular dumping sites as water easily erases and washes away a killer’s DNA.

It’s sparked interest in Manchester and online with Twitter users using the hashtag “#the pusher” to speculate on the possibility of an undiscovered serial killer roaming Manchester’s streets at night.

At least 22 of the bodies are unidentified, although police say that there is nothing suspicious about their deaths.

The most high profile case of a body being pulled from the canals was that of Chris Brahney, a 22 year old bartender who went missing one evening. Although his body was recovered his cause of death is unknown.

Another mystery death was Canadian tourist Anthony Muise, who was pulled from the canals after having suffered a stab wound to the chest.

The Greater Manchester Police dismiss the notion of a serial killer, but how do they explain the high number of deaths and bodies found in the canals?
