Cows on ice: 100 cattle tragically plunge through ice and drown

Around 100 cows wandered onto a frozen lake in South Dakota and tragically broke through the ice and drowned.

Last week the cows wandered onto a South Dakota reservoir that was covered in ice six inches thick. The cows were owned by Mike Carlow, and his brother Pat helped him take care of the herd. The brothers are members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

The cattle were looking for shelter during a bad windstorm when their enormous body weight caused the ice to collapse underneath them. Most of the cows fell through and drowned.

The Carlow brothers found the dead cows on Jan. 8 when they went to give them their morning feeding.

At first Pat couldn’t find the herd until he noticed a group feeding by the reservoir. That’s when he saw several floating masses in the frozen water.

Apparently, most of the cows that went onto the ice were prized 2-year-old bred heifers. The accident will cost Mike Carlow about $300,000.
