Illegal firearms trade: Man exchanged his huntings dogs for illegal rifles

Guns are illegal in Taiwan, only police and native aboriginal hunters are allowed to legally have guns, and even then they are heavily restricted.

But police were tipped off to a man in the southern city of Kaohsiung who said he had guns to sell, and when police raided his house they found three long rifles and several high power air rifles. The 59-year-old man identified by his last name, Li, said he enjoyed hunting, and hunting with guns was easier.

Mr. Li also bred hunting dogs and there were 30 of the dogs wandering about his property. When questioned by police, Mr. Li explained he’d exchanged his hunting dogs for the hunting rifles with Taiwanese aborigines.

Mr. Li shrugged and told reporters that it wasn’t a big deal, at most he’d be fined for owning the guns.

And at least he still has his dogs.
