An investigation is still ongoing after a government worker reportedly crashed his small recreational drone onto the White House lawn early Monday morning.

The device has been identified as a quadcopter. It can be purchased commercially and is equipped with four propellers. A Secret Service spokesperson said the quadcopter measured about two feet in diameter.

A White House staff member reportedly heard and saw the drone flying low and approaching the southeast lawn around 3 a.m. When the device made contact with a tree, the White House was put on lockdown.

Secret Service members retrieved the quadcopter and combed the lawn for additional objects.

An initial statement revealed there was no known threat. An unidentified person came forward after losing sight of the drone and seeing the crash on the news, and the White House is reportedly working to corroborate that person’s story.

A permanent no-fly zone surrounds the White House, and it is illegal to fly drones within the District.
