Birthday theft: Young mother tries to steal microwave, husband already in jail for theft

A woman at a shop in Taipei was arrested by police for shoplifting. Oh, yeah?
The woman, identified only by her last name, Wu, picked up an empty cardboard box for a small heated fan, valued at around USD $30. She then placed a more expensive item, a USD $120 microwave, into the box and sealed it with packing tape she had brought with her.
But an employee noticed there was missing box and after checking the other appliances noticed there was a missing microwave from the display area. He contacted the cashiers towards the front of the store.
One of the cashiers noticed that the packaging tape on Mrs. Wu’s box did not match the tape commonly used by the store and opened the box to check its contents.
When police showed up and took her down to the station, they attempted to contact her husband, but found out that he was already under arrest for another crime. The woman begged to be let go, claiming she had a month-old newborn baby at home, AND it was her birthday! So how about a mulligan on the shoplifting, eh?
The police checked to make sure that the baby was being cared for by Mrs. Wu’s mother, but declined to release her for her birthday. Ms. Wu will be held in police custody until she’s been prosecuted.
