Egyptian soccer stampede: 22 killed in footbal riot at Cairo stadium as police battle fans
  • 9 years ago
At least 22 fans were killed in Cairo on Sunday when riot police clashed with fans outside an Egyptian Premier League soccer game.

Reports said that the deaths occurred as supporters of Zamalek tried to force their way into the stadium to watch the game against Cairo rivals ENPPI.

Eyewitnesses said that police set up barricades and used tear gas while trying to disperse Zamalek fans who arrived at the Air Force Stadium without tickets.

Many of the dead reportedly suffocated during a stampede.

Supporters groups and the police blamed each other for the tragedy.

The deaths mark the deadliest incident at a soccer match in Egypt since 72 fans died at a game in Port Said in 2012. Egypt introduced limits on the number of fans allowed into games following the incident causing fans without tickets to try and storm stadiums.
