Protect Journalists: ISIS hostage Kenji Goto was sending a message by blinking
  • 9 years ago
ISIS posted the killing video of Kenji Goto, one of two Japanese hostages captured by the militant group, on February 1st and the reaction from netizens has varied.

Some netizens speculated that Goto was blinking a Morse code message, some claim the doomed man was blinking: “Don’t save me!”

Others considered Goto’s work in the Middle East honorable but said he should’ve committed suicide as soon as he realized he would be captured. Goto could’ve saved his country the resulting trouble of ransom demands and criticism if he’d just killed himself before ISIS could leverage him as a tool.

Japanese netizens consider Goto’s actions as a journalist in the Middle East more foolhardy than courageous. Many wanted the two Japanese hostages to take responsibility for their own actions since they ventured into a war torn country.

But what about those who are unable to escape their situations? Should the world continue to ignore them or care enough to show the world their situation?

Kenji Goto went to the Middle East as a journalist who showed the world real problems, his death shouldn’t also draw a curtain across his accomplishments.
