Threatened by ISIS militants, Turkish military moves Suleyman Shah’s historic mausoleum in Syria

A Turkish convoy entered northern Syria Saturday night in order to demolish a historic tomb and move the remains to a more secure site near the Turkish border. Hundreds of Turkish forces, tanks, armored trucks and aircrafts entered Syria in a move that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has condemned as “flagrant aggression.”

The important tomb holds the remains of Suleyman Shah, the grandfather of Osman I, who is the founder of the Ottoman Empire. The tomb sat at the edge of the Euphrates River near the conflict-ridden Aleppo, the location where Suleyman supposedly drowned. Turkey has always considered the site sovereign territory, however, Islamic State militants threatened to attack the site last year.

In response to growing concerns about the safety of the 40 Turkish troops and the historic shrine, Turkey sent 39 tanks, 57 armored vehicles, 572 soldiers, AWACS military aircrafts, military helicopters and drones into Syria in order to help move the historic site to a safer location. One military spokesman said that guards at the tomb have been receiving a recent uptick in harassment from ISIS militants, who have commandeered the tomb’s surrounding area.

Turkey’s operation began on Saturday at about 19:00 GMT as one group of troops made their way through Kobane, a city that Syrian Kurdish fighters just retook from ISIS last month. They reached the shrine’s location later that night. The other group seized an area 200 meters from Turkey’s border near the village of Esmesi and secured a new area for the tomb. One soldier was “accidentally” killed during the raid, Turkey’s military said.
