Locked up in North Korea? Canadian pastor Lim Hyeon-Soo goes missing during missionary trip

A Canadian pastor has has disappeared after traveling to North Korea on a humanitarian mission trip in January.

Reverend Lim Hyeon-soo, 60, head pastor of the Toronto-based Light Korean Presbyterian Church, lost contact with his friends and family on January 31 after crossing the Chinese-North Korean border.

A North Korean official is said to have invited LIm to Pyongyang before his disappearance. Lim planned to leave North Korea on February 4. It was initially thought that he may have been detained in North Korea because of the country's 21-day quarantine policy for foreigners. If he had been detained because of the quarantine, Lim should have been released on February 25.

Lim oversees a nursing home and an orphanage in the North Korean city of Rajin and is involved with several other projects in the country. Reverend Chun Ki-Won, the director of a South Korean Christian missionary organization and a close friend of Lim’s, says that Lim was one of the “most influential Christian missionaries operating in [North Korea].”

Because of North Korea’s 21-day quarantine policy imposed on foreign visitors to North Korea following last year’s Ebola outbreak, Lim’s friends and family were not too alarmed by Lim’s initial silence. After February 25, some 21 days after Lim was expected to leave North Korea, they have begun to worry.

Friends note that some of the projects Lim has been involved in are linked to associates of Jang Song-Thaek, the uncle of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un who was executed in 2013.
