Locked Up Abroad: Oregon woman is jailed in Japan for having Adderall
  • 9 years ago
A 26-year-old Oregon woman, who was due to start a new life in Japan, is instead being detained in one of that country’s immigration facilities after being accused of smuggling in a methamphetamine drug, known to Americans as Adderall.

Carrie Russell had been teaching English in Korea for two years and received word that she’d be able to move to Japan and teach there.

She has a prescription for the drug Adderall, a amphetamine-based drug used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD.

While packing for her move, she didn’t bother to check any regulations concerning the drug’s legality in Japan.

Once there, undercover police caught up with her and took her into custody on suspicion of smuggling amphetamines.

While prescription amphetamines may be legal in Korea, they are highly illegal in Japan, where the Japanese Mafia known as the Yakuza are known to deal in its underground trade.

Carrie’s mother, Jill, is actually a pharmacist and made several pleas to the Ministry of Justice which have yet to be answered.

It also didn’t help that the pills themselves were repackaged into a Tylenol container instead of leaving them in the original vial increasing officials' suspicions.

Jill states she did this “to preserve Carrie's privacy and dignity around a sensitive issue regarding medication to treat a disorder which falls under the area of mental health."

Carrie has been in solitary confinement since February 20 undergoing numerous interrogations. Her parents are worried that she may crack under pressure and confess to a crime she didn’t commit.
