Gold heist: GTA 5 style robbery in North Carolina likely was an inside job

New details in the robbery of $4.8 million in gold from a tractor trailer transporting the precious metal from Florida to Massachusetts on Sunday suggest the crime may have been an inside job, investigators say.

According to earlier reports, two TransValue security guards transporting gold and silver had stopped on Interstate 95 in Wilson County, North Carolina, due to mechanical problems.

But later reports suggest the passenger in the truck asked to pull over because he was feeling sick and wanted to vomit.

Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. said the guards had just refueled their 18-wheeler when the strong smell of gasoline made the guard feel sick.

When the 18-wheeler stopped, three men approached in a white van and robbed the guards of five 5-gallon buckets filled with 275 pounds of gold bars. Detectives believe the suspects knew what cargo the tractor trailer carried even though it was unmarked.

Detectives said the robbers attempted to steal the entire trailer at first, but abandoned the plan because they didn’t know how to operate the commercial vehicle.

The robbers also left $5 million worth of silver on the truck untouched.

The guards told investigators the robbers ordered them to lie on the ground. Their hands were zip tied and they were marched into the woods.
