MH370: Missing Malaysia airlines flight report reveals battery in black box ‘pinger’ had expired

A 584-page report into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 published on Sunday revealed that the battery of the missing plane’s black box 'pinger' had expired more than a year before the plane mysteriously vanished while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The report, published by the International Civil Aviation Organization, an independent investigation group, noted that while the battery on the locator beacon on flight MH370's cockpit voice recorder was working, the one attached to the pinger of the flight data recorder, the other so-called black box, expired in December 2012.

While the device itself is believed to have been working properly, once a locator beacon's battery, which is intended to last at least 30 days following an accident, passes its expiration date, its reduced effectiveness could complicate rescue efforts by shortening the time the device emits locator pings.

While experts doubt this played a role in the failure to find the plane, the report also revealed MH370 was carrying 221 kilograms of lithium ion batteries, which may have posed a fire risk.

The release of the report comes during the first anniversary of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The report has been criticized by family members of the 239 passengers and crew aboard the plane for offering no clear answers.
