Dozens of people were injured on Monday when an Amtrak train crashed into a tractor-trailer that stalled on railroad tracks in North Carolina at around noon, according to CBS affiliate WRAL.

Halifax County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Bruce Temple said the first two cars of the train derailed after the collision. Local news footage showed the engine toppled onto its side with the second carriage, which was a luggage car, derailed.

Transportation officials say 40 passengers were injured in the accident, with 25 people taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center by bus and another 15 by ambulance.
Authorities said none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening.

Buses took some 170 other passengers who weren't injured to Richmond, Virginia.

Someone who witnessed the accident said the tractor-trailer driver was trying to make a difficult turn when the train crashed into it, according to WRAL. The driver jumped from the truck before the collision, the same witnesses added.
