Syria helicopter crash lands in rebel territory, one crew member executed, others taken

At least four crew members of a Syrian military helicopter have been captured by rebels after the vessel crashed in the country's northwest, according to a monitoring group.

Syrian television reported the plane encountered a technical problem and was forced to make an emergency landing, and that it was not downed by rebels.

Video footage circulating on social media showed a helicopter crashing in the distance.
Photographs posted online showed one member of the crew apparently being executed on the spot. The pilot, who was injured in the crash, was reportedly one of those taken from the wreckage by rebels. It isn't known what happened to the sixth crew member.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least four of the six crew were taken hostage by the al-Qaeda offshoot, the Nusra Front.

According to the United Nations, the Syrian air force uses helicopters to drop , improvised munitions such as barrel bombs in indiscriminate attacks that cause widespread casualties in residential areas.
