Peru bus crash: Four vehicles pile into each other on highway, killing at least 34

At least 34 people were killed and 70 others injured in a four-vehicle pile-up in western Peru, one of the worst traffic accidents in the country for many years.

The accident took place in the coastal town of Huarmey in the early hours of Monday. A Peruvian official told Reuters that the driver of a bus possibly fell asleep, causing his bus to swerve into the opposite lane and crash into another oncoming bus.

The collision led to a pile-up as another bus and then a refrigerated truck crashed into the wreckage. The accident claimed at least 34 lives but the number of dead is likely to rise.

Many of the victims were members of the Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance of Peru who were returning to Chiclayo from an event in the capital.

Some 3,600 people die in traffic accidents in Peru every year, about 80 percent of them are pedestrians.
