Force field: Boeing patents Defensive Force to deflect explosive shockwaves

Deflector shields seen in sci-fi movies such as Star Wars may soon be a reality as Boeing has been granted a patent for a shockwave attenuation system which uses an energy shield to protect objects from explosion shockwaves and shrapnel.
The system generates a plasma shield using lasers, electricity and microwaves after detecting a nearby explosion. The system is designed to protect objects from the considerable damage that shockwaves and shrapnel can cause following an explosion.
A small area is ionized, making the temperature, density and composition inside it different from its surroundings. The shockwaves are either then absorbed, reflected or deflected by the protective arc.
The innovative technology has one shortcoming. Since the shield also absorbs light, everyone protected by the system would be completely blind when the system operates.
The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory has also been working on a similar defense system.
