'Insider attack' at Afghan military base leaves one US soldier dead

An American soldier was killed and several more were wounded when an Afghan National Army soldier opened fire at a compound in Jalalabad, Afghanistan on Wednesday, U.S. and Afghan officials said.

Authorities said it was too soon to tell whether the assailant was an insurgent posing as an Afghan soldier or whether the incident was an 'insider attack.'

The shooting took place shortly after an American diplomat was leaving the compound aboard a helicopter after a meeting with a local governor, Reuters reported U.S. and Afghan sources as saying.

One man who appeared to be an Afghan National Army soldier was on the top of a military truck with a machine gun, and was guarding the governor compound along with the American soldiers. Details are still unclear, but reports say soon after the helicopter departed the man opened fire on the American soldiers, who returned fire.

Two Afghan soldiers were also injured in the shootout, but it was unclear who had fired first, Afghan police said, adding that an Afghan soldier was being questioned.
