LA train crash: Car utterly destroyed by collision near Los Angeles USC campus which injures 21

A motorist and the driver of a light rail train were seriously injured when their vehicles collided Saturday morning in Los Angeles. Nineteen rail passengers sustained minor injuries.

The train was travelling eastbound on Exposition Boulevard just before 11 a.m. while a Hyundai Sonata was traveling the same direction on its right, an LA Metro spokesperson told ABC.

Witnesses said the car's driver tried to make a left hand turn toward the University of Southern California campus and failed to notice the train before the violent collision. The car then became wedged between an upright pole and the train, causing the train to derail and the car to be almost completely destroyed. Its 31-year-old driver was gravely injured.

"It was just like a big, loud crash of metal," USC freshman Johnny Stevens told NBC Los Angeles after surveying the scene from his dorm room. "It was huge so we knew it wasn't just a car crash. We figured something big happened, so we looked out our window and we saw half of a car smashed into the rail."

Rescuers used the Jaws of Life to free the injured man from the mangled wreckage. The train operator was also taken to hospital in less serious condition. Of the nineteen injured passengers who suffered minor injuries, eight were treated in hospital.
