ISIS foreign fighters: 5 Dutch citizens detained in Turkey for trying to join ISIS
  • 9 years ago
Turkish authorities detained five Dutch citizens on Sunday as they attempted to cross into Syria, apparently with the intention of joining the Islamic State. Ninety-two Syrian citizens were also detained as they tried to enter Turkey illegally.

The Turkish army says five hunting rifles were also found buried near the border in the Gorentas area of Turkey's Hatay province.

Turkish media reported that the Islamic State flag was raised over the Syrian village of Kara, a town less than a kilometer from the Turkish border, earlier that same day. As a response, Turkish flags were also raised on some roofs on the Turkish side.

The Turkish army has tightened border security following gains made by the Islamic State, which now controls wide areas of Syria and Iraq.
