Palestine: Egypt Creating Buffer Zone with Gaza to Strengthen Blockade

The Egyptian Army has been demolishing homes on its side of the border with the Gaza Strip in order to create a buffer zone that will enable Cairo to strengthen its blockade of the Palestinian enclave. The move comes in the wake of an armed attack by Islamic extremists on an Egyptian army checkpoint near the border with Gaza, which left 10 soldiers dead and 17 wounded. Palestinian organizations condemned the attack and said the perpetrators were not from Gaza. Egypt cites security concerns to justify its closing of the border.
