‘Smart’ Bandages Sense Bedsores Before They Appear

Researchers at UC Berkeley are developing a “smart” bandage that can detect an impending bedsore before it appears by sending electrical currents to determine cellular deterioration in the skin.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco have been working on a “smart” bandage that can sense a bedsore based on the cellular deterioration of the skin--long before it is visible to the eye.

The results could lead to preemptive diagnosis or faster treatment before serious complications arise.

The device is a thin, adhesive film embedded with numerous electrodes.

When a small electrical current is discharged between the tiny electrodes there is little impact on healthy skin, but once the tissue cells begin to deteriorate, the charge begins to “leak through”.

That information is then sent to an attached connector for further review.

Also called pressure ulcers, bed sores are s
