Colombia: UN human rights report cites concerns over threats
  • 9 years ago
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights released its 2014 annual report on Colombia. While acknowledging the progress made in peace negotiations, the report called on State institutions to strengthen efforts to eliminate poverty and inequality, especially in rural areas, as a necessary condition for achieving and maintaining peace. At the same time, the UN remains concerned over the large number of death threats against human rights defenders and political activists. Observers say there is a common pattern in that those threatened are precisely those who are supporting the peace process. Social organizations demand that the Colombian government seriously investigate the latest threats. Natalia Margarita reports from Bogota. teleSUR
