A mystery regarding an unpleasant scent in Louisville, Kentucky has been solved. Last week, the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District or APCD began scouring the city for any evidence that would indicate the source of the odor.

A mystery regarding an unpleasant scent in Louisville, Kentucky has been solved. Last week, the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District or APCD began scouring the city for any evidence that would indicate the source of the odor. 

Officials have now confirmed that the stench causing culprit is geosmin. 
That's good news because geosmin, which is often referred to as earth's odor or perfume, is a harmless organic compound that is made by the soil's microorganisms. The smell is far more noticeable in muddy or wet conditions. 

Councilwoman Madonna Flood seemed to sense that the weather and dampness in the area played a role in the smell before the conclusion was made. She suspected the odor had something to d
