VENEZUELAN PRESIDENT ACCUSED OF MURDERERING STUDENTS
The past few weeks have seen a number of mass demonstrations across Venezuela, with students taking to the streets to protest against insecurity in the country and the worsening economic crisis. The rallies often descend into clashes between protesters and police, who have resorted to force in a bid to quell the protest movement. At least seven students have been killed in the clashes, including a 14 year old boy who died on Tuesday February 24 after being hit by a rubber bullet fired by police. The story has sparked widespread condemnation among Venezuelan web users, with many calling the president, Nicolas Maduro, a murderer.
The #MaduroAsesinoDeEstudiantes hashtag, meaning Maduro murderer of students, has begun trending, with netizens taking aim at the Venezuelan head of state. Social networkers have slammed the authorities` excessive use of force against demonstrators, and there are a lot of posts blaming the recent fatalities on last month`s introduction of a new policy, which as the online edition of the International Business Times reports, gives police officers wider freedoms in using deadly force to control protests.
And while a lot of Venezuelans have taken to the web, others have taken to the streets. Wednesday saw fresh demonstrations across the country, and as we can see from these images that have been doing the rounds online, protesters carried banners and signs, blaming president Maduro for the student deaths, calling him a murderer …
