In a ceremony presided over by Cuban President Raul Castro, the Cuban Five were given the Order of Playa Giron, the country's highest award and declared heroes of the Republic of Cuba. The five anti-terrorist fighters were deployed to monitor the actions of violent counterrevolutionary organizations in Miami in the 1990s and were later detained by the US government until their final release in December 2014. teleSUR
