Canada?s Extractive Companies Step Up CSR in New Government Program - The Minute | 3BL Media

Canada?s extractive companies are an outsized global business sector of activity. More than 100 Canadian companies are at work on more than 8,000 properties around the world, making up almost half of all mining and mineral exploration efforts. With this large global footprint, an environmentally messy industry with a checkered ethical history has attracted increasing international scrutiny. Groups such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and Transparency International are looking at inadequate Canadian CSR practices.

Now, the Canadian government, in consultation with the industry, has laid out a blueprint for improved CSR. The program, ?Doing Business the Canadian Way: A Strategy to Advance CSR in Canada?s Extractive Sector Abroad,? provides guidance and penalties for Canadian extractive companies working abroad. The Strategy provides increased training and support for CSR initiatives and services in foreign markets, and threatens withdrawal of government support for non-participating companies. Canadian economic diplomacy is now being coupled with ethical standards for better business.
