Everest Climbing Route Changed Following Last Year’s Incident

Nepalese officials have decided to change the route to climb Mount Everest to circumvent the treacherous Khumbu Icefall where 16 Sherpa guides died last year in the single deadliest incident on the mountain.

The route to scale Mt. Everest will be changed next month to circumvent the treacherous Khumbu Icefall where 16 Sherpa guides were killed last year.

Climbers will now take a more central route up the mountain after base camp then merge on to the same trail as before.

It was actually the way mountaineers ascended Everest more than two decades ago, but it was changed in the 1990s towards what is known as the “west shoulder” instead.

This less central route is shorter and easier to navigate but more at risk of avalanches from surrounding ice cliffs and hanging glaciers.

A collapse in this area caused last year’s single deadliest incident in the mountain’s history which led Sherpa guides to boycott for better pay and safety measures.
