Hundreds of rescued migrants arrive in Sicily

More than 600 migrants, including many children, arrived in the Sicilian port of Porto Empedocle after being rescued off Libya’s coast. Libya serves as the transit point for would-be migrants from around the region. Many are fleeing Syria or escaping the hardships of sub-saharan Africa. Last week more than 3000 people died trying to make the crossing.
